Bluerydge Marks R U OK? Day with a Commitment to Mental Wellbeing

At Bluerydge, our people are our greatest asset. Operational success in cybersecurity and national security demands resilience, precision, and focus—but none of that is possible without a strong, supported, and mentally healthy team.

On 9 September 2021, we marked R U OK? Day with a virtual lunch and open discussions, encouraging team members to check in with one another and reinforcing the message that supporting mental health is everyone’s responsibility.

A Conversation That Could Save a Life

R U OK? Day is a national initiative designed to reduce mental health stigma and encourage meaningful conversations. It reminds us that checking in on a friend, colleague, or family member can make all the difference.

The concept is simple: asking someone "R U OK?" can be the first step in preventing a crisis. Many people struggle in silence, and a conversation—when approached with genuine care and intent—can be a lifeline.

At Bluerydge, we recognise that the high-pressure nature of our industry can create unique challenges. The mental toll of cybersecurity, defence, and national security work is real, and staying mission-ready also means ensuring our people feel supported, connected, and valued.

Understanding the Mental Health Challenge in Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity and defence professionals often operate in high-stakes environments, where constant vigilance, long hours, and the ever-present nature of threats can lead to burnout, stress, and mental fatigue.

Industry studies have shown that:

  • Over 50% of cybersecurity professionals experience high levels of stress, with many reporting burnout due to workload and expectations.

  • The constant demand for problem-solving and crisis management can lead to mental exhaustion if support networks are not in place.

  • Many professionals hesitate to speak about mental health concerns, fearing it could be seen as a sign of weakness in an industry that demands resilience.

This is why creating a culture of open dialogue and mental health awareness is essential—not just at Bluerydge, but across the entire cybersecurity and defence sector.

Creating a Culture of Support at Bluerydge

We believe that mental health awareness should not be a one-day conversation—it needs to be embedded into workplace culture.

At Bluerydge, our commitment to mental wellbeing includes:

  • Encouraging open conversations – Ensuring that employees feel safe to express concerns without judgment.

  • Building a strong internal support network – Promoting peer-to-peer check-ins, leadership mentorship, and professional mental health resources.

  • Fostering resilience in high-pressure environments – Providing tools and strategies to help our professionals manage stress and workload effectively.

  • Normalising mental health discussions – Removing the stigma and reinforcing that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Our goal is simple: to ensure that every Bluerydge team member feels valued, supported, and heard—every day, not just on R U OK? Day.

How You Can Make a Difference

It doesn’t take much to start a conversation that matters. If you notice a colleague or friend who seems withdrawn, overwhelmed, or unlike themselves, don’t hesitate to ask:

  • "R U OK?"

  • "You don’t seem yourself lately—do you want to talk?"

  • "Is there anything I can do to support you?"

The key is to listen, without judgment, and to encourage professional support if needed.

If someone isn’t ready to talk, let them know you’re there when they are. Small gestures can make a massive difference in someone’s life.

Looking Forward

Bluerydge remains committed to fostering a mentally healthy workplace, ensuring that checking in, supporting one another, and prioritising wellbeing are not just annual events, but everyday practices.

A strong workforce is one where people feel safe, valued, and connected. Asking "R U OK?" may seem like a small act, but it has the power to save lives and strengthen teams.

We encourage every organisation, especially within cybersecurity and defence, to make mental health a priority.

At Bluerydge, we will continue to champion mental health initiatives because support is not a one-time event—it’s a constant commitment.
